Stilbaai is a charming seaside village, known as the 'Bay of Sleeping Beauty', situated on the southern coast of the Western Cape; it forms part of the picturesque and world famous Garden Route.

Established in the 1894, this coastal resort is located approximately four hours from Cape Town, between Riversdale and Mossel Bay on an inlet where the Indian Ocean and the Goukou River converges. Stilbaai or Still Bay is home to nearly 4000 residents, who enjoy its pollution-free, safe and tranquil location, as well as its beautiful scenery.

Suburbs

There are two main suburbs, parallel to one another in Stilbaai; Stilbaai West and Stilbaai East. Mixing old and new, every type of property is available in these areas from new luxury homes on the beach, old Cape-Dutch abodes, modern apartments and even farms and smallholdings.

Stilbaai East

Stilbaai East borders the Geelkrans Provincial Nature Reserve and stretches to the banks of the Goukou River. In this suburb you will find the Stilbaai Airfield and Pauline Bohnen Nature Reserve and the Preekstoel rock is another popular attraction. Stilbaai West

Main Attractions

Blombos Cave and Museum
Surrounding the banks of the Goukou River, Stilbaai enjoys a rich and ancient history; for thousands of year the ancestors of the Khoisan people, and the San themselves, populated this area. As hunters and gatherers they lived off of the ocean, river and veldt - leaving behind various artefacts. This lead to a various significant archaeological discoveries made in the famed Blombos Cave; with excavations yielding new information on the behavioural evolution of modern humans and items dating back tens of thousands of years. The Blombos Museum of Archaeology is therefore not to be missed.

Stilbaai Ancient Fish Traps
These ancient intertidal stonewall fish traps, built thousands of years ago by the Khoisan are still in working condition and is used by enthusiasts to this day. This is truly something unique that the family will enjoy and is easily accessible from the Stilbaai Beach; this unusual ancient activity is open to the public so remember to take your fishing nets and add this one to your itinerary.

Hand-Feed Eels
Stilbaai is the only place in South Africa where you will find tame eels. When visiting the tourism bureau housed located in the Palinggat Homestead you will have the rare opportunity to witness these fresh water eels - that have called the Palinggat Fountain their home for the past 125 years - being fed by staff of the bureau Monday to Saturday just before 11:00. There are also an array of outdoor activities for nature lovers including; bird watching at the Botterkloof Resort, several nature reserves, hikes and tours along with beautiful sandy beached for those wanting to bathe in the sun or go for a dip.

Neighbouring Towns

Jongensfontein
The little town of Jongensfontein is a mere 10min drive outside of Stilbaai and is just as jam packed with attractions and things to do. Far reaching views of the ocean and great surf conditions have made Jongensfontein a popular surfing hub, though all water-related activities can be enjoyed here. Its historical landmark, the 'Fonteinhuisie Museum' depicts the history of the town and serves as a local information centre.

Melkhoutfontein
7km inland from Stilbaai, Melkhoutfontein is a town proud of its heritage, displayed in the township tours that are on offer here - walking around; cooking traditional meals and authentic accommodation make these trips unforgettable. There is also a yearly garden display, hosted at the Soete Inval Botanical Garden, which runs from July to October.
